“Ever?”

“Mmmm.” I rolled over and blinked a few times.

“We’ll be at Valinor within an earthhour,” Briar stated.

“An earthhour? How long have I been asleep?”

“A while.”

“Why didn’t you wake me?” My body screeched in pain as I jumped out of bed.

“You needed it. We all did.” She stretched as if she was just waking up too. “Zia let us all rest while she took care of the ship.”

“How is Huxley?”

“He’s good.”

“Are we still ahead of Caspar?”

“Yes.”

“Okay. I’ll be out in a few.”

Briar left, and I took the quickest shower ever, hissing when the water hit my back. I didn’t want to be all dirty and smelly when I saw Kaci.

Kaci.

I would see her soon. Why did that make my stomach feel like a house full of butterflies?

Knowing it was possible Caspar would show up while I was there, I threw on a black protection suit, which was resistant to bullets, weather, and chemicals, and hurried to the weapons room where I picked up a gun and dagger. From there I went to the bridge.

Valinor was within view. Swirls of white clouds covered parts of the blue, green, and lavender planet.

Briar was talking to Bristow. “We’ll be there soon.”

“Will I see you?”

“No,” she answered. “I wish. We have to be ready. We need to get Akacia and get out of here.”

Bristow’s face fell. “Oh.”

“Once we get rid of Caspar, we’ll be back.”

“I look forward to it.”

A few moments later, we were close enough to jump. I grabbed a device and jumped to Valinor.

The second my feet touched the ground, I took off running to find Kaci. I didn’t have to run far. She came tearing out of the compound. Her blonde hair flying behind her. I started to smile, thinking she somehow knew that I was here. But as my eyes swept her face, I’d recognize that look of fear anywhere.
